    1. The Gamecocks: Stephanie M. SellersJake Wilkes has a duel role in this novel about the Lumbee Indians, its heritage and history. We meet Jake as he takes the podium and relates his feelings about these Indians, why he feels their heritage needs to be protected and their story told. Meeting this prim lady while others shunned his thoughts and words, he enters her home, she sits at her desk and he relates his story. Chapter I is titled in this book he is writing with her: Tenacity and Providence H [...]

    2. I am always a fan of history, and this book certainly met that need. Whenever I pick up a Stephanie Sellers book, I know I will learn something historical, and it will be accurate. How do I know? She always lists the references she uses in the back of her books. And the history she enlightens us about is not your normal, average, every-day history. It is often little-known and incredibly interesting. I have to say that I wish she would write a history book! She makes the study of history enterta [...]

    3. The only category I feel no doubt placing The Gamecocks in is “Southern.” It has dramatic, mysterious, mischievous, and most importantly historic content. The book is set up with the main character introducing each chapter of his story by reading it to us, himself being the author. This gives a sense of realism which is necessary because, in fact, the historical reveal brought forth here is being brought forth right now.Jake, the main character and “author”, is quite a real person. In fa [...]

    4. I couldn't put it down. I loved the relationships of the two main characters. True lifetime friendship are hard to find. To know someone will always be there for you no matter what is inspiring. I enjoyed the way the author kept you wanting to know more. Very enteraining and riveting. I experienced rage, love, pity and compassion.

    5. A little hard to read at first. Well worth the beginning struggle! There is a glossary. Written in Lumbee dialect. Great pain staking research & detail. This was a lot of new information for me. I will probably read this again in about five years. Hopefully will catch up some by then.
